“I’m not a creative person.”

“I can’t think of anything original.”

“I don’t like any of my ideas.”

We’ve all have these frustrating moments – when we need to be creative but no matter how much time we spend scribbling ideas on paper or staring at things on the computer screen, we just can’t seem to think of any good ideas.

And then we self-sabotage by putting ourselves down and comparing our abilities to other “creative” people who have ideas that come so naturally. “Why didn’t I inherit any of those creative genes?”

But, have you ever thought that creativity is a learned trait? In fact, many psychologists think creativity isn’t something people are both with. It’s a learned skill that improves with practice.

So what can we do to exercise and train our brain to think more creatively when we’re struggling to come up with ideas?

As architects, we spend a lot of time searching for and testing the best strategies, tips, tactics, and tools to spur creativity and generate design ideas. As you’ve probably found out for yourself, there are a lot of ideas out there for ways to be more creative. Each month hundreds of new blog posts, articles, and case studies are published by people all around the world on the topic of creativity. That may seem like a good thing, but that’s a lot of information to soak up and learn. And who knows if it will actually help YOU become more creative as you create your own project – and not just any project – a dream home project.

Research shows that creative people (including architects) complete very specific rituals and habits that ultimately lead to a more creative design process and success in their projects.

At YR Architecture + Design, a handful of tactics and habits have been our lifesavers over the years, our go-to strategies to help us think more creatively in our daily architectural design work. And of course, we want to share them with you! We know what it feels like to get stuck and not be able to think of new ideas. And we don’t want you to struggle.
